Date: 7/10/05 11:30 am (UTC)It was late and there were only a few people left so nobody danced in the last half hour but I got good comments afterwards, especially for the harsh stuff.
Our aim isn't necessarily filling the dancefloor but exposing people to unusual music they don't get to hear anywhere else and we're more than happy to play local/unsigned bands, too.
We've been called the "John Peel of clubnights" before. :o)

Date: 7/10/05 11:36 am (UTC)That's a compliment and a half! Seriously though, it must be nice to have that kind of freedom, that you know you can play anything that's *good* not just because it has the right beat.
Don't get me wrong as I'm also relishing the challenge of keeping people dancing but whilst looking through the CD case I can't help thinking "I wonder what would happen if I played that...".

Date: 7/10/05 11:48 am (UTC)Oh yes. I'm really happy when I accomplish this with typical German goth fare (that's hardly known over here) when I play at The Calling (the Cambridge goth night). I usually play a better known track to get people dancing and follow with something unknown in a similar style, which usually means they stay on the dancefloor.

Date: 7/10/05 12:09 pm (UTC)We're only running three per year or so at the moment, the next one will be sometime early next year.
You'd be more than welcome and if you want a guest DJ slot, let me know.
I'll announce it here as soon as we've got a date.

Date: 7/10/05 12:51 pm (UTC)Course, I'd be up for a guest slot. I'd jump at the chance to inflict some of my more random CDs on people :)
