Danny Thompson
31 Jan 2006 02:49 pmUp until last night, I hadn't heard of him but was utterly blown away by his skill on the double bass. He can play everything from quiet accentuation to a full-out Funk-like slapping sound and classical use of the bow (and not so classical, producing really odd sounds, too). Absolutely brilliant. His style complemented Richard's (no relation) virtous guitar playing wonderfully and they often bounced bits and pieces back and forth.
This website has a biography and a few nice photos (incl. two with Richard Thompson which give a very good feel of how last night's gig was like).
There's also a great quote which covers a lot of what (hand made) music means to me:
"I didn't take up music to be in a studio, it's to be on stage, like going on stage is where I'm at and it shows in the music...it's different every night."
