A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to shoot my friends of the Dark Wave band Last July at a fantastic location in Limehouse, London. This multistory abandoned warehouse is being kept as a film and photo location so despite it being in disrepair and rather filthy due to the missing roof and roosting pigeons, there is someone who looks after it and makes sure there aren't any dangerous spots. There's also a working toilet and running water. There are various areas well lit by daylight, not necessarily by windows but by missing bits of wall and roof, but also a few dark bits that would require some artificial lighting.
Here are a few examples that should give you a good idea of what the location can offer:

On Saturday I took photos of Last July at an abandoned warehouse in London and I've been working on them this evening. I usually don't do a lot of extreme image processing, a bit of a crop, some exposure, contrast and colour adjustment, that's it. Then I came across this image of Alix almost floating in air so I decided to play with the effects in Lightroom a bit and this was the result:

To my horror I just realised I hadn't blogged about this summer's group portrait shoot at The Roost. Every year a group of (mostly amateur or semi-pro) photographers get together and hire a venue in central London. The Roost (or its sibling, The Perch) is ideal for this as you get three floors worth of different rooms, all individually furnished and stuffed with interesting, weird and wonderful props. Most rooms have huge windows so there is plenty of natural light and I usually don't need to rely on extra lighting equipment. There is always a number of models available but many photographers bring their own. We usually work on a collaboration basis, i.e. nobody gets paid and it's an exchange of time and skills. In the end, models, photographers and designers will have new material for their portfolios.

This year I had only two planned sets, one with the band Last July and the other a collaboration with the dress designer Jezebelle's Boutique, the model Druidess of Midian and the hat designer Off With Her Head.

So, here are a few examples: First off, Last July:

The Neutrinos were my favourite band at Strawberry Fair this year. The played an acoustic set (acoustic guitar, acoustic bass guitar and singer) of their relatively hard to describe style. Lounge Punk? Something like that. The singer was excellent and one of the most expressive I've seen. A joy to photograph as well.
So here are a few impressions:

I was utterly exhausted so only got up around mid-day and as usual, brunch ran on for far too long so I feared being too late for the photoshoot in Bethnal Green. As I walked down towards the railroad bridge, I spotted some brightly haired people (a bit unusual in Hackney) and sure enough it was [livejournal.com profile] alixandrea with other band members. We walked to the studio where I discovered that the other tog was Taff's wife (how small is the world? And I didn't know she was a tog, either). I spent quite a long time chatting and waiting for people to put makeup on before I started taking headshots of those who were ready. The light outside was ideal so that worked quite well.
After everyone was ready, we took various solo and group shots under one of the arches which formed a good backdrop, much to the amusement of the occasional passer- or driver-by (the one taxi came past twice for a second look) who hadn't expected a bunch of loonies in scary makeup and, in case of the women, skimpy costumes.
It was a lot of fun and the Texas Chainsaw Orchestra are a really nice bunch (and from seemingly everywhere around the world) so I had a fun time and even produced some cool photos, I think. The band leader, Daniel, was a good director, for which I was glad because I still suck at that sort of thing.
I was flaking towards the end, though so I was glad when we stopped. I watched them rehearse a new tune (Low-Budget Monster from B-Movie Hell) and I definitely need to see if I can get to their next gig.
The following photo should give you an idea of the madness that went on:

After reading this, I'm really sorry to have missed Top Gear of the Pops.

ION, I've been feeling shitty today, literally. Any further elaboration would be TMI. This, sadly, has put a downer on my productivity. :o(

- Really knackered. Need a holiday (i.e. a few days of doing nothing but sleep, eat and relax without going anywhere or doing anything physically demanding) :o(
- Calling last night was OK. Great to catch up with people (where was [livejournal.com profile] toripink?) but except for 20 minutes of acceptable Bleep/Stomp from Loki, the music was rubbish. Good turnout, though so good for them.
- Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] c0rvu5r3x for the comp copy of the Kreuzdammer EP!
- Mentioning KD, they're playing at the Man on the Moon this Friday, quite possibly supported by Fire&Forget as their original support had to drop out. Should be a laugh. I'll take my camera and hope for good light (haha).
- Battle of the Bands (Battle of the Album Covers would be more appropriate but it's still good)
- Underworld Evolution isn't that bad if you watch it for what makes it good (i.e. mainly Selene's arse). Just one comment: I thought that the Lycan transformations were better in the first film and didn't feel as CGed.
- I'm catching up with Battlestar Galactica after stopping halfway through Season 1 last year.
