Infinite Monkey Cage
24 May 2011 11:37 amYesterday evening I got out of work early and took a train down to Kings X. This was supposed to be a fast train but it was in fact rather slow going and even stopped twice (once in Hitchin without opening doors and again just before KGX) so I arrived with 10 minutes delay. Tube to Oxford Circus was quick, though, so I made it to Broadcasting House at about 20 minutes to 6, where there was already a sizable queue. Spotted
civi rather early on so had a good spot. A while later,
zenmeisterin turned up and then
chilledchimp so there were plenty of people to chat with and while away the time until the doors were opened.
medusa_nw turned up, too (good to finally meet you!). When the doors opened and we trickled in
fractalgeek and
pengshui_master hadn't turned up yet but they both made it in time and got in.
We were herded into a rather hot and stuffy "conference room" where we waited and chatted until we were let into the auditorium. This is a rather funky (art deco), actual theatre with sloping stalls, a balcony but unfortunately not a raised stage. IIRC,
fractalgeek mentioned it has a seating capacity of 350. We ended up in the 4th row so had quite a good view.
Apart from the hosts Prof. Brian Cox and Robin Ince, the panel consisted of geneticist Steve Jones (who was also at the Uncaged Monkeys show in Cambridge), cosmologist Marcus Chown (the only guest who shares his name with a UNIX command) and comedian Paul Foot and the theme of the day was "What Don't We Know?".
I don't want to give anything away until after the broadcast on Monday (4.30, Radio 4) but, just like the live show, it was equally enlightening and entertaining. The whole thing lasted a good 90 minutes with not a lot of chaff so I really wouldn't want to be on the production team who will have to cut that down to 30 minutes. :/
After the show we randomly bumped into
commlal as well so it was a little friends reunion, too. :o)
I managed to get a reasonably early train back and was home by 11:30. I'd only had a sandwich for dinner and I wanted something for lunch today so I made some pasta with a red pepper that needed using up while the latest episode of Game of Thrones was downloading (and what an episode it was! Tyrion Lannister FTW).
