I'm very impressed with his simple coffin, it was basically a wooden box with a cross on the lid. You could even see the dovetail joins, almost a pauper's coffin.
What's with the sealed zinc coffin in oak casket, though? It's supposed to slow down putrefication but why?

A related question, does anyone know if [livejournal.com profile] sea_cucumber made it to Rome?

Probably, but why not embalm him, then?

And that should obviously have been "sealed".

From what I can tell, embalming is a way of "corrupting" the body, which is a no-no. James could probably tell you more, since he knows a bunch about burial practices these day.
