Hi!
I'm looking for a good Asian restaurant (Chinese, Thai, Indian or even obscure things) in Cambridge and vicinity. Doesn't have to be cheap but should have good value for money (price range £15-20 per person) and excellent food is the main point.

Any suggestions?
(We've already been to the Peking Restaurant in Burleigh St and Thanh Binh in Magdalen St, you get the idea).

Cheers!

Theres a nice little one further up the road from Staples, not the takeaway but up past the bakery.
I think it's called 'Hot pot'. Ask [livejournal.com profile] vyvyan she knows.

Ah yes, I've been there before with Christi and Andy. Thanks for the reminder.

Charlie Chans, or the one near the Graduate are quite good. Would the Noodle Bar on Kings Street be any use to you??

While the Noodle bar is good, we're looking for something more atmospheric and comfortable.

The Ugly Duckling on Trinity Street (Chinese), Bangkok City on Green Street (Thai), the Kohinoor on Mill Road (Indian)...

Charlie Chan's is indeed fantastic, but might be a bit expensive.

The Ugly Duckling is the one on the corner doing all you can eat buffet on Sundays, isn't it? I've meant to go there as it's run by the same people as the Peking Restaurant. Probably not appropriate for the occasion, though.

With so many recommendations, I must have a look at Charlie Chan.
Bangkok City is already on our shortlist.

I remember there being quite a good Indian on the first floor about a block towards New Hall from the big Oxfam bookshop; sorry if this sounds a bit vague, someone else took me there so I don't remember the details. Fairly near the side street that has Pizza Express, if that helps.

A bit too vague for me, I'm afraid as I'm not in that part of town very often.
Thanks anyway.

Thanh Binh you mentioned, but it deserves another mention anyway.

Charlie Chan's is great. Go for upstairs if you can - downstairs is a noodle bar by day, part of the main restaurant by night, but still has quite a noodle-barry feel. Upstairs is more comfortable.

I really don't rate the Ugly Duckling at all. But other people seem to like it and I've not been there in years.

There's a place sort of opposite Chan's too (well, somewhere on Regent Street on the other side, not one of the places further up on the same side) I've been to once, which wasn't bad at all. Thai, I think.

If you noodle then there's quite a few of them about now. King Street, Charlie Chan's during the day, next to the Kambar, town end of Milton Road (by the kebab place and the curry takeaway).

The Ugly Duckling changed hands sometimes last year, it's now run by the same people who run the excellent Peking Restaurant in Burleigh St.

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep the Noodles in mind but we're looking for something more comfortable. I've been to the one in King St. before and really liked it, especially the pineapple icecream afterwards.

In any case, do NOT go to the Chinese place opposite the Catholic Church (our Lady & the English martyrs)- not sure what it was called, but it's beside the Lan Hong House Chinese Takeaway. I was there with Andy once and it was CRAP- overpriced, useless & slow service, food utterly lacking in taste, and atmosphere close to zilch.

As one of the founding members of the Cambridge Curry Club I can heartily recommend several curry houses. There's one on Cherry Hinton Rd next to the Rathmore pub which is exquisite. The curries are a little hotter than the shop equivalents, but to a regular restaurant visitor that's not unexpected. Two of us once went, had papadum, starters, main mean with rice, naan and several beers and it still only came to £22. Which seeing as I'd offered to stand the first £20 was a bit annoying!
The Koh-I-Noor on Mill Road is very very good also. And there's a Chinese Restaurant called Chopsticks up by Magdelene bridge which I had a very good meal at a few years back, which I would hope is still there.

Cheers!

The Cherry Hinton one sounds good and might consider it if they have milder dishes as well as most of the group aren't that er, hot on hot food. Can you find out what the name is?

I've heard mixed reviews of the Koh-I-Noor and Chopsticks, though (both had cases of food poisoning).

Just had a look on localsecrets and they get very good reviews.
Thai seems to be high on our wish list, so we'll add it to our list.

Thanks!
