Was wandering around the DVD shelves at Tesco's and my eyes caught this film. It sounded interesting, and I wanted to treat myself to a little something so I picked it up. I hadn't heard of it before and reading the blurb in the booklet, I knew why. It came out pretty much at the same time as The Lost Boys, which of course was the higher budget vampire movie with the better known cast, so Near Dark vanished into obscurity.
Just watched it and it's cool that they re-released it. It's definitely watchable, has some great Yes! moments and some good one-liners.

Lance Henriksen plays the leader of the group of vampires, and he's very good.
If you get the DVD (or want to borrow it, you're more than welcome), make sure you watch the documentary on the second DVD, especially the interviews with the actors are cool, how they got into and stayed in character and so forth.
The film has some cool music as well, including a cover of Fever by The Cramps.

Bizarre indeed.

It's one of the few things that irritate me in the film.

Near Dark must easily be one of the most influential films on the look and feel of the original Vampire: The Masquerade. The RV even turns up in the 1st. Edition player's guide.

The infamous Dr Knox (Malk from Sheffield and later Cambridge, played by Mark Evans or [livejournal.com profile] malkmark) had one as well. ;o)

Good concept for a Sabbat family pack, yes. Ma, Pa and three kids ;o)

Great film, I remember they showed it on TV is australia, it lasted for about 30 minutes because they had to cut so many scenes.

It wasn't that violent/gory. The only harsh scenes were when Severen slices up the bartender with his spurs and maybe the way the cop gets shot in front of the house.
I've seen worse here but obviously don't know how harsh censorship is in Australia.

I do believe that scenes of excessive violence/gore shouldn't be watchable by youngsters/those who can't cope with it but cutting up a film is wrong. If the film contains too much violence/adult themes, don't show it on TV.
Mini rant over.
