I just had my first persimmon fruit, really nice. Sweet, juicy, firm flesh (similar to mango but not stringy), taste somewhere between mango and peach. No seeds or stone but I don't think you can eat the skin.
A friend of mine's father has a tree of these (in central Suffolk) and managed to get loads of them ripe this year: we had one about a week off the tree, and it was extremely nice. (That article suggests a bewildering variety of different types, but I think his one's from Italy.) I hadn't heard of them ripening in this country before...
