When there's something plugged into the USB port, the DVD tray won't open because it catches on the plug/USB stick.
ETA: Stop it, I know there are ways around it but there shouldn't have to be. It's simply bad design.

Is there only the one USB port? Either way, that's just bad design!

No but by the way my laptop sits within the crap on my desk the only accessible one of the free ones.
It actually works when a standard USB cable is plugged in but the USB stick is a little bit wider. Not ideal when you want to burn the stuff that's on the stick onto a DVD without copying it to the HD first.

So use a short USB cable.

I'm not buying a stupid USB extension cord just for that.

The designer prolly thought that it would be OK as there are other ports. The way I see it, you have four options:

1. Insert the disc in the drive then insert the memory stick (which I'm sure you've done incidentally).

2. Tidy your desk so you can access the other ports - which perhaps you should do anyway as if the crap is that close to the laptop it's probably buggering up the airflow around the machine and stopping it cooling properly.

3. Get an extension cable as mentioned (or a USB hub).

4. Get a new laptop :)

I know all that.
Still, everything should function when everything is in use. It's just bad design (and a case of about 2mm).

Yeah I know you ain't simple or something :) (I'm still working on getting that stating the bleeing obvious award)

You'll prolly find that the designer was limited by the motherboard configuration which dates back to when most USB devices were on a cable. TBH I think the bad design actually lies (in some ways) with the manufacturers of the USB stick; my mobile broadband dongle is thicker than a chav that's been knocked on the head too much, so they give you an extension cable so you don't run into problems like this.
