Are there any manufacturers who still offer laptops/notebooks with Windows XP?
ETA: I have odd requirements for a laptop:
- reasonably compact: Not widescreen (which is where most fail), and not bigger than 15" (so it fits in my backpack), light, reasonable battery
- Lots of processor crunch and memory so it can deal with huge RAW photos
- Vista takes up too much of the former already so I'd rather have the power available to apps. (and a familiar OS)

Yes. Here is the selection available at Dabs (a site I've used frequently and can recommend). :)

Hm, I either get netbooks or used stock when I click through the system. :o(
Thanks, though.

Some of the factory rebuild Toshibas Morgans are selling still have XP. Other than that I can't think of any new ones.

It's also possible that the licensing of Vista allows you to install a previous version of Windows instead.

Ahhh, that might work.

Only if you get Vista Business, you can then downgrade to Xp Pro. But you'll need to provide you own XP install key & media. But IIRC you are allow to use one from a previous machine.

Yarp.

It's what my company did (sort of, XP->NT) for our old machines when NT stopped being supported.

You've missed the boat on that no one does windows oem

Dabs still have some http://www.dabs.com/productlist.aspx?NavigationKey=11105&NavigationKey=50220000&NavigationKey=46460000&CategorySelectedId=11105&PageMode=1

Beyond that I would say consider a mac, their new macbooks are out and they can have good prices on the previous version. Or suck it up and get used to Vista, its a good OS once you get used to it and if you are using 2md of ram and above.

I'm not buying a Mac when all my apps are Win.
The main reason I object to Vista is that it's such a processor and memory hog. I'd like my power available to apps, not to run the basics.

ahh but you can run a virtual PC or a dual boot system on a mac and get both win and PC apps :) I found my macbook to be way more powerfull than a PC of a similar spec.

As for Vista mainly its its over ambitious indexing and graphical shell. You can switch those off.

Now that's really bizarre!

I'll be honest, i was looking around for an XP laptop earlier in the year but in the end went for an Acer Vista machine
I found it to be really quite fast, and Vista suprisingly nice to use.
I know it's supposed to be a processor-hog, but i'm pretty sure you can turn all the fancy stuff off and make it more streamlined?
Also, i loved all the Acer software it came with. All very easy to use.

Yoyotech still sell Windows OEM discs. I bought it when I had to replace my computer, about a month or so ago. I'm sure most of the independent shops will still have copies.

Dell have an agreement with Microsoft that allows them to keep shipping XP for some years yet. I'm not sure if it's open to retail sales; it was last time I looked, although you paid an annoying premium for the privilege of, y'know, having a working machine...

Something like an EEE wouldn't have the CPU grunt you need, but there are some dual-core 12" profile laptops out there that are super-portable. the only thing is that all of the ones I've seen are widescreen.

I'd take a look at ebuyer.com, though.

Given your hardware requirements are specific, I'd not worry about the OS as a primary concern, but find a lappy that suits you, then pop a copy of XP on top if it comes with the stain of vista.

Yeah, I realise that the more I upgrade the less viable a netbook is going to be so I've come off the idea.
I gave my first laptop to my parents and it finally seems to have died so they offered to buy me a new one if I gave them my current one. Can't say no to that offer. :o)
Thanks for the tips!
