Are there any manufacturers who still offer laptops/notebooks with Windows XP?
ETA: I have odd requirements for a laptop:
- reasonably compact: Not widescreen (which is where most fail), and not bigger than 15" (so it fits in my backpack), light, reasonable battery
- Lots of processor crunch and memory so it can deal with huge RAW photos
- Vista takes up too much of the former already so I'd rather have the power available to apps. (and a familiar OS)

Beyond that I would say consider a mac, their new macbooks are out and they can have good prices on the previous version. Or suck it up and get used to Vista, its a good OS once you get used to it and if you are using 2md of ram and above.

Date: 8/12/08 11:58 am (UTC)The main reason I object to Vista is that it's such a processor and memory hog. I'd like my power available to apps, not to run the basics.

Date: 9/12/08 08:57 am (UTC)I found it to be really quite fast, and Vista suprisingly nice to use.
I know it's supposed to be a processor-hog, but i'm pretty sure you can turn all the fancy stuff off and make it more streamlined?
Also, i loved all the Acer software it came with. All very easy to use.

Given your hardware requirements are specific, I'd not worry about the OS as a primary concern, but find a lappy that suits you, then pop a copy of XP on top if it comes with the stain of vista.

Date: 9/12/08 01:57 pm (UTC)I gave my first laptop to my parents and it finally seems to have died so they offered to buy me a new one if I gave them my current one. Can't say no to that offer. :o)
Thanks for the tips!
