Cat?

I'm sure most of you have seen today's XKCD so I don't have to mention its coolness but do any of you have an idea what the cat falling off the edge might refer to? Is it just random?
And I just had a thought: It might refer to Schrödinger's Cat as we're talking about the "observable universe".

Oh, I know the theory. Not only hover but basically be a perpetuum mobile you could use for generating electricity because it'll keep spinning.

The problem with the theory is that a cat will land on its feet from any (well, up to a point) height whereas the buttered toast thing will only work from a certain multiple of the average table height (due to the time it takes a falling piece of toast to turn 180°.
