I'm sure most of you have seen today's XKCD so I don't have to mention its coolness but do any of you have an idea what the cat falling off the edge might refer to? Is it just random?
And I just had a thought: It might refer to Schrödinger's Cat as we're talking about the "observable universe".

To see if it lands on its feet :-)

That's what I thought -- seeing if a cat falling from that height still lands on its feet.

Hm, an unprotected cat at that height wouldn't fall but die because it's in space. Or would it? Which brings us back to Schrödinger's experiment.

True, but the cat isn't in space, it's falling allongside the very tall graphic, but outside of it.
I must admit, i first thought of Schrodinger myself, but then dismissed. It would have been better if there was a toaster and some butter on the floor next to the figure...

Ahhh, fair enough. I've been thinking too much.
Heh, I'd like the buttered toast idea.

one of the paradoxes of modern probability. A cat always lands on his feet, and toast always lands buttered-side down. So if you strap buttered toast to a cat will it mearly hovver?

Oh, I know the theory. Not only hover but basically be a perpetuum mobile you could use for generating electricity because it'll keep spinning.

The problem with the theory is that a cat will land on its feet from any (well, up to a point) height whereas the buttered toast thing will only work from a certain multiple of the average table height (due to the time it takes a falling piece of toast to turn 180°.
