I honestly can't remember how they translated Spam at the time but I never read the subtitles, anyway.
the "in ihn enthalten" is entirely unnecessary. ;o)

I thought about that, but the original quote is "Do you have anything without any Spam in it?", the 'in it' being equally pointless. I think I may give the parrot sketch a try, if only for how good it feels to loudly proclaim "Dieser papagai ist TOT!" I miss being able to speak german as well as I could when I was about ten, I regret not speaking it for about ten years.

OK, if you want to be precise, it should be "Haben sie irgendwas ohne Frühstücksfleisch drin?"
"alles" would be everything.

I think German would suit Cleese's character in the parrot sketch very well. ;o)

Oh, thank you. That pleases me so much!

It is abysmal, though.

I'm really not any good at all at understanding spoken German any more, so I really couldn't have known if the translation was poor. The phrase 'Dieses hier ist ein ex-Papagai' just did it for me though. Hell, I'm going into town to get a load of German tutorial stuff tomorrow.

I refuse to watch it. There are some things that only really work in its original language, many classic Python sketches included. It's a cultural thing, too.
In my mind, translating e.g. Pratchett is basically impossible. The pun laden language is difficult enough, finding equivalent cultural references is the major challenge. If you leave them as they are, they will be lost on most German readers.

IAWTC.

My first definite experience of this was trying to read Paul Auster's New York Trilogy in German. You could hear the English, it was very off-putting. And no offence to the translator, I'm sure they did a good job with an impossible task.
