Date: 3/9/08 09:46 pm (UTC)In my mind, translating e.g. Pratchett is basically impossible. The pun laden language is difficult enough, finding equivalent cultural references is the major challenge. If you leave them as they are, they will be lost on most German readers.

Date: 4/9/08 10:17 am (UTC)My first definite experience of this was trying to read Paul Auster's New York Trilogy in German. You could hear the English, it was very off-putting. And no offence to the translator, I'm sure they did a good job with an impossible task.

It seems to have been used in English first, though.
