Search site aims to rival Google (BBC News)
I'm not convinced, either. Example: The fire at the pier in Weston-super-Mare was in the news today so I entered "weston super mare pier" in cuil and got a few hotel/travel sites. When you enter the same string into Google, the first hit is the Pier homepage.
I also don't like the way hits are presented. Every hit has a picture and there's too much blurb for my liking. I haven't had time to look at options yet but on first look it isn't very impressive.
The name is questionable, too. Few people will know how to pronounce it (just like "cool"). Using a homophone is a fair marketing strategy but it needs to be more accessible. It's similar to the cinema chain VUE. It's supposed to be pronounced like "view" but I don't think anyone would, and definitely not if they have the slightest idea of French.

Date: 28/7/08 12:21 pm (UTC)Cuil - I dislike the display format, and it was 10 entries all about the film and a punk band.
Google also has a cute logo today.

Now it'll be funny if they set up offices across the road from Google.

Date: 28/7/08 03:22 pm (UTC)One thing that amused me from the article, was they listed a bunch of other rivals to Google and I was like "Who on Earth are they?"...it's little wonder they failed if they didn't get heard about.

Date: 28/7/08 06:36 pm (UTC)I've always pronounced it "view", but then I'm an english speaker prounching the name of an english speaking company...
Of course the fact that products like VUE and Cif have audio advertising which pronounces it for you also helps ;-)
I agree on the name Cuil though, I read it as "quil" for some reason.
