Search site aims to rival Google (BBC News)

I'm not convinced, either. Example: The fire at the pier in Weston-super-Mare was in the news today so I entered "weston super mare pier" in cuil and got a few hotel/travel sites. When you enter the same string into Google, the first hit is the Pier homepage.
I also don't like the way hits are presented. Every hit has a picture and there's too much blurb for my liking. I haven't had time to look at options yet but on first look it isn't very impressive.

The name is questionable, too. Few people will know how to pronounce it (just like "cool"). Using a homophone is a fair marketing strategy but it needs to be more accessible. It's similar to the cinema chain VUE. It's supposed to be pronounced like "view" but I don't think anyone would, and definitely not if they have the slightest idea of French.

it took it four attempts to find the natural history museum website.

Not Impressed.

EPIC FAIL. :)

Wake Up Screaming - second link on Google after the film of the same name.

Cuil - I dislike the display format, and it was 10 entries all about the film and a punk band.

Google also has a cute logo today.

Or 'cul', which would be unfortunate for French speakers.

Amazingly, it brings up my name as first hit when you search for "karohemd" but not LJ, flickr, deviantART, yahoo or any other sites I use regularly but TrekNature (http://pt.treknature.com/members/Karohemd/), on which I have only a few photos.
At least my domain is on the first page.

Ohh shiny. I kinda like it but then again I can speak irish so I knew how to say the name anyway.
Also seem to be some bugs but I couldnt not find anything I was lookign for.
Now it'll be funny if they set up offices across the road from Google.

A quick check reveals that they don't have my company website listed, which is somewhat irritating considering that according to Alexa and Netcraft we're in the top 1,000,000 websites for traffic globally. They may archive 120,000,000,000 sites, but it'd be nice if ours was one.

I pronounce VUE as view. Just thought I'd say. Not sure ifI got that just from the name or hearing other people say it though.

One thing that amused me from the article, was they listed a bunch of other rivals to Google and I was like "Who on Earth are they?"...it's little wonder they failed if they didn't get heard about.

The thing that bothers me the most about it is that they say they're not retaining any data. My big beef with Google isn't the product (PageRank simply works), it's the data retention, but to not keep any back means that their algorithms won't improve to sort out your failed searches at all.

I'll play with it—I do like the results page and the suggested side searches and similar. We'll see I guess.

I've always pronounced it "view", but then I'm an english speaker prounching the name of an english speaking company...
Of course the fact that products like VUE and Cif have audio advertising which pronounces it for you also helps ;-)
I agree on the name Cuil though, I read it as "quil" for some reason.

I love pictures, but in exhibitions, or perhaps on the dining-room walls. I don't like things slowing down my infofeeds.
