I just attempted to install a couple of extensions but when I click on the link, I get the message "Software Installation is currently disabled. Click Edit Options... to enable it and try again". When I click on Edit Options, I can't find one to enable Software Installation.
There's only "Warn me when web sites try to install extensions and themes" but even if I add the addon site to the Exceptions, I still get the message.
I remember this working at work where I'm running the same version of Firefox (although under Windows 2000, but that shouldn't make a difference).

Any ideas?

Have you recently updated Firefox?

I hadn't worked on 1.5 so when I updated to the new version today, I thought I try again and it still didn't work.
It worked fine at work after updating to 1.5...
