Finally I managed to catch an episode. This time, on rivers. Theoretically nothing we haven't seen before but those pictures and shots were just amazing.
I've been a fan of nature/wildlife programs since I was little with Attenborough's 12 parter (was it just called The Earth?) being one of the highlights, when there was nothing that could make me miss an episode on Saturday evenings at 7pm. New filming techniques make pictures possible that have never been seen before and Attenborough is usually the first to use them.
I really like the diary bit at the end which shows how difficult it actually is to get those pictures. How many hours, days, weeks or even months pass before just a few minutes or even just seconds of usable footage.
In recent years, I'd lost interest a bit but Attenborough's programs are always fresh and utterly wonderful.

Have you read his autobiography? I ended up reading it while walking along the street.

No but that sounds like an interesting addition to my stack of books to read. Thanks!

I think you're referring to "Life on Earth"

Quite possibly. It was just called "Die Erde" in Germany.

My grandparents had the book of that Attenborough one, from when I was small too. I remember vividly loving looking at all the pictures in it...

I loved the one about snow leopards two weeks ago, and you're right, the 'making of' bits at the end are just as fascinating as the actual programme.

I guess the 'making ofs' are unique to the BBC to make it up to a full hour of programme, as the US version will be intercut with copious ad breaks.
