"they are likely to become doctors, lawyers or architects"

That made me giggle, too. Most of the goths I know and actually have a "proper job" are computer geeks in one form or another, or work in (tele)marketing or retail. [livejournal.com profile] puddingcat is the exception, she's an accountant. ;o)

Yeah, because even though goths are usually smart, they also are unemployable from the PoV of most companies who are scared of scaring off their customers (I speak as someone who has to take all their earrings out to sit on a checkout because "it's not the image the company wants to portray")

Yeah, [livejournal.com profile] devalmont is probably the smartest dressed person I know.

So they are fine with purple hair but not earrings? Odd.

There's a definite goth (long, dyed black hair in a ponytail and pale complexion are a bit of a giveaway) at my local Tesco but I'm not sure if he's wearing earrings.

Tesco's don't make you take your earrings out, or not as much as Moggies.

And no, they're not fine with purple hair, but they can hardly make me shave it off, can they? ;)

Polarisation

On thing I have noticed is social polarization. The world seems to be dividing into Charvas and Goths.

The building a friend moved into (tower block) is surrounded by Charvas and my friend felt a bit safer when she ran into two Goths she vaguely new from a club, and were friends of a friend. The Charvas scare her, and everyone else.

I once wrote to the council who were considering trying to restrict student number (and I find Charvas generally can’t read whilst Goths go to university get high degrees then end up in telesales). You should try invigilating a Charva plumbing exam for those forced to do an apprentiship when they just want to drink cider and have sex (the college seems to divide those on plumbing courses into those that want to do it classes and those forced to do it and who occasionally turn up). I was arguing that the families they wanted to attract to the area would lead to a Charvas influx ASBOS and old ladies being afraid to cross the street. I would have nothing against families moving into the student neighborhood if they generally were well behaved but in my area the only well behaved teens to twenties/early thirties are Students/grads (in my area) Goths/ (including those few with parents and working/School/College, orthodox Jews (who unfortunately generally stay in a small area about 2 miles away) and a few Chinese/Koreans living in the area. For that reason I don't want an influx of families destroying the community (unless and this may be stereotyped they are Jewish). When I do shop work it’s the Charvas I am watching to see if they are trying to steal everything in sight or switch labels. In my whole time their I have never seen a Goth or Orthodox Jew thrown out, try to steal, have never received a radio call from those on cameras telling me to "watch the Goths/boys wearing yarmulkes by the Pillars" yet it is always watch the "Charvas wearing the baseball cap with XXXX switching labels, make sure that the front door is covered and back up is on the way".

That brings me to another point, what language is it the Charvas speak? It seems unintelligible when they talk between themselves and they seem to think you can understand them when they talk to you. Sounds like some random chicking clucking noises. Even the Hebrew and I think as some of it sound more Germanic Yiddish the Orthodox Jews speak between themselves intermittently is more understandable, and when they talk to you unlike the Charvas they speak English, well spoken with a home counties (sounds Bucks) without a trace of the regional accent, despite probably never having lived in the Home Counties.

I guess however I am just prejudiced by my experience with Charvas leading me to tar them all with the same brush.

*nods*
It's not that black and white (sorry!) but I guess it's true at least for some areas. In my part of town you only have "average" people and chavs (large parts of the area are still council housing), very few trendies/high earners and even fewer goths, except the one I sometimes see at the corner tesco's.

The Chav language will remain a mystery to me, too. It would be interesting to research it but I have better things to do...

yay! finally. Shame only those who already know this will probably read it. The Charismatic Christians who think they are devil worshipers won't notice. Nine inch nails are much better and darker than Manson, and Trent can hold a tune...I like the fact that the Lydia lynch's of the world go unnoticed...
