I didn't exactly loathe it but not really like it, either. There was nothing that really caught my attention, nothing like the really good eps in DS9, for example, but nothing really bad, either. Short, it was enjoyable, average Trek.
[livejournal.com profile] mancling said last night that they killed Star Trek. No, they didn't with Enterprise, they did it a long time ago. Pretty much anything after "All Good Things..." (the ultimate TNG episode) was pretty dire, with a few exceptions here and there (mostly in DS9, very rarely in VOY and then only in Doctor episodes).

A few comments that won't give away too much for those who haven't seen it:

- The godawful theme music
Go and make a cup of tea or something, just don't listen to it, it's vile.
When I saw an ep in the US I thought the commercials were still on (you have teaser, commercials, and then the titles over there) and later realised it was actually the titles...

- The characters:
To be honest, I like Cpt. Archer. He seems to have the ST spirit (to boldly go etc.). The Prime Directive as such (as a written law) doesn't exist yet, so he can't break it. Which is a good thing, as all ST captains break it sooner or later, most even multiple times ;o)
The others I'm still trying to distinguish from each other. Dr Phlox is kind of cool with his natural remedies and treatments, the CGI smile was just cheesy and unnecessary (like Bilbo's treatment in LotR).
T'Pal is trying hard to fill the Spock/Data slot but doesn't have the same impact. She's too sarcastic for a Vulcan (sarcasm, IMHO, requires emotion) but provides some nice lines.

- The Klingons: they look like in ST V and later, i.e. with forehead ridges.
In TOS (for the uninitiated, The Original Series), i.e. about 100 years AFTER Enterprise, they had none, understandably, considering the make up budgets and abilities they had then. Proper Klingon foreheads first appeared in ST V The Undiscovered Country (best ST movie apart from First Contact) and were consistent throughout with some minor modifications. In the DS9 time travel episode Trials and Tribbleations (which puts them on the set of the TOS ep Trouble with Tribbles), Odo asks Worf about Klingon foreheads and Worf says something along the lines of "We don't talk about that". Bashir assumes some genetic mutation. This must have happened twice in about three centuries...

- The tech
Isn't that bad, IMHO. Of course it looks better and more modern than in TOS. I mean, they can't really put analog dials and buttons and things in. IMHO, it needs too look more modern than current technology but not as sophisticated as TNG, which it does. No replicators, the transporter was just released for use with biological material but nobody trusts it, a lot of things aren't automatic yet and some things don't work at all.
I won't really complain about the inconsistencies like going to Warp while still in the solar system as they keep doing that in ST throughout whenever appropriate (like beaming through shields).

- The story
Oh well...

- Best lines
Chief Engineer: "Bridge! We're taking damage down here! What's going on?"
and
"Stun seems to work"

Hey, I quite liked the mouth bit, and lets be honest, the story wasn't that bad. You have to give a series a while to get going. (Espically a Trek series)

I think the tech level was ace. Looked brilint. Wasn't to advanced, (some of it based on current NASA tech) and lets be honest, the ship looked damn cool, without looking like it was super modern. Also liked the more cramped feel of the interior of the ship. made the oridginal Enterprise look like luxury, which I think was really good. Had a more militry feel about it. Again, I think a good thing.

I'm looking forward to the next episode, and indeed the rest of the series. I think it's a more promising start than DS9, and definetly Voyager. Probably on par with TNG.

As I said, the tech was right.

I didn't comment on the story because there was nothing to comment on, neither good nor bad. ;o)
