As I said earlier, there was plenty of light so I was happily shooting along at ISO800 but it was also very inconsistent.
Next time there are strobes, I need to take a lot more photos in short sequence to get lucky more often. I have two or three photos which are absolutely fantastic in terms of subject and composition but have the faces completely blown out. :o(

Anyway, here are some samples I'm really pleased with. Comments and constructive criticism, especially from the photo geeks, welcome.

Who's that lame-o in the last pic? Someone should tell him he needs to get a haircut. ;p

Oooooh I love the one of the singer! Very dramatic!

Second one down LOL sorry.

Ah, that's [livejournal.com profile] devalmont who's one of the guitarists, actually. :o)

Yes, I like it, too. It's a good moment and almost evenly lit (which was the biggest problem at this gig).

Looks like he's singing to me LOL

It's not singing, honestly. I screech like a trapped animal.

That's what singing is, isn't it?

Thank you so much, Ozzie, these pictures are fantastic! We look like a proper rock band and everything!

It was my pleasure. And I finally have a few photos I can show to people and say, look, I can take live photos for you. It's all part of The Plan™. :o)

BTW, I hereby give you permission to use these photos on your website, as long as you credit me with a link to my website (http://www.karohemd.co.uk).
Cheers!

There will be a few more and I'm going to refine these a bit, too so you might want to wait a bit, though.

I'm sorry I didn't make it, I was on a business course last night. The pictures are amazing. Looks like your weekend at BlueBarn paid off. On the subject of Bluebarn, Barbara put me in touch with the guy who built it and we had a meeting today with the landlord of the warehouse in Ely we want. Looks like Paul will be building the practice rooms which is really exciting! Paul recons it will be this time next year by the time it's ready :( but I'm just really flipping happy to have someone like him on my team. Thanks for telling me about Bluebarn!

I've now realised that of course I know you, and that you came to film club at my house in November, but I didn't make the connection because I don't recall talking to you about the BlueBarn, although I assume that I must have done at some point.

I think it may have been another band member that filled in the rehearsal studio survey that I did via the cambridge bands site. It's a small world! I'm the one setting up a rehearsal studio in Ely:)

That's good then, it is a small world. The fact that I'd been to your house and didn't even realise it is the best bit though.
We are doing a film club in Ely on the 23rd of march Tob's showing The Game and Falling Down - the theme being 'Micheal get your gun'. If you can make it, you are very welcome.
When are you next playing live? I really did want to see you play. I am on so many courses right now to get this business going, I just had to choose the course (which was in Huntingdon) rather than come ans see you play on Wednesday.

I need a better camera. My ISO 800 shots are full of digital noise.

Well, there still is a gap of at least $400 between our respective cameras so not surprising, really.

I had expected a slightly more technical comment from you but I take this as a compliment. Thank you! :o)

I like the second and the last landscape ones best I think. A few of the others are too centrally-composed for my taste - and I'd crop some "tighter" on the people rather than leave empty space on a couple of sides.

But "Cool!" :-)

From: [identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com
*nods* I might still fiddle with some crops.

Thanks!

Looks like you dealt well with crazy lighting of Doom. 'fraid I've no advice to offer on such things, though selective contrast alterations and clone/airbrush photoshopery might be able to deal with the blue 'burn' around some of the bright reflected light.

Compositionally very well put together and particulary liking the strong sense of Atmosphere® particularly in the last three shots :D you can almost hear the metal

You should see the other ones... The exposure was completely random because it would change within a few 100s of a second due to the strobe and trying to focus something so erratically lit was a nightmare, too.

*nods* Thank you! If I can overcome my inability to focus manually, I think I might be getting somewhere.

technical ability is easier learned than an eye for a good shot

True. However, due to the way my vision works/doesn't work (lack of depth perception etc.), it's something that will be very hard to do.

Numbers 2 and 6 are my favourite. I think that they are the ones most loaded with atmosphere, but to be honest, they are all pretty damned atmospheric!

From: [identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com
The backlighting helped a lot with the atmosphere, I think.
Thanks a lot!

very atmospheric, and captures the feel of the gig. a nice variety of styles. the last one is brilliant - although i'm not sure how intentional the lack of contrast on the face - but it looks almost staged to make the guitar the star!

Date: 6/3/06 11:22 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com
Thanks, I'm really happy with them, too.

Well, I could say it was intentional but I'd be lying. ;o)
Due to the strobes, it was always hit and miss and this came out as a nice silhouette shot with the guitar standing out.
