Why does UK TV so often ignore the specific cuts written for ad breaks in episodes in US TV series and instead cut just completely randomly? There was an example during Supernatural on ITV 2 just now, I think there was even a bit missing (Sam was cut off halfway into calling for Dean). Idiots.

because there would have to be more advert breaks. God knows why this should be a problem though as they can just make the ad breaks shorter or something.

They wouldn't have to use all of them and the ones they do put in should be at a break/cut, not in the middle of a dialogue...

Largely because the commercial stations in the UK have to comply with quite strict rules on how many minutes of commercials they can show per hour of programming and when. As Channel 4 found out recently for showing too many adverts whilst showing Lost for example.

I have no idea why they would ever do it in the middle of dialogue. That is just a mistake.

But yup, the other reasons explain why they have less breaks.

It wasn't exactly in the middle of a dialogue but it cut off a scream and there was clearly a bit missing after the restart.
