Wha?

It was a classic romp yeah, but Best Film of the YEAR???!?!!?

Not close, not even in the same ball park as over 20 other great movies.
The acting was excellent for TV; the script was filled with classic one liners but no genuine character development or writing above mediocre; the SPFX's were fine, but nothing that will stand out.

I enjoyed Serneity. I really did.
But calling it Film of the Year makes me treat it as I now treat ALL overhyped overrated movies- worthy only of disdain.

And what's worse, I won't be the only one.

(shakes head sadly)
What many of the fans of Josh don't realise is the following paradox:
It is his fans that keep his shows alive and grant him huge respect and allow TV shows like Buffy stay on the air.

It is those self-same fans fanaticism that turn the rest of Hollywood against him. Who needs it?

(laughs)
Serenity best film of 2005?

My arse!

Boo!

It was a fantastic film for Firefly/Joss Whedon fans and it managed to create some more interest in the series. It's a very good SciFi romp but nothing more.

what would you put above it?
It may not be the best written, the best acted or anything else that you would place as a criteria, but personally I can't think of a film I"ve enjoyed more this year.

O the top O my head?
Proper:
Good Night and Good Luck- highly intelligent, well acted, and awesome.
A History of Violence- Cronenburg shows what a master of his craft can come up with.
The Island- actually funny, well acted, and the most intelligent allagorical tale out this year.
Kung Fu Hustle- action packed, fun and even better, actually OPRIGINAL!
The Aristocrats- GO SEE THIS FILM! You will laugh your ass off.

Honourable mentions which also beat the pants of Serenity:
Batman begins shows you CAN do a decent blockbuster, with decent acting and an intelligent script that also CAN break out of niche fanbase.
Sin City- so noir it hurts. A great homage which also pushed the boundaires of SPFX.

ALl of the above have ODDLES more of those sometimes important things... like better acting, a better script, a better sense of direction (Serenity NEEDED a good editor- it was sloppy in that respect) etc.
Again, I am not saying Serenity was bad, but while it was in parts more fun than Star Wars, in all catagories of what makes a good film, it was roundly beaten by the above.
Now if the Award was for biggest Fan Fave- fair enough! But worthy cinema?
C'mon...
;)

I guess that's all down to personal preference as personally I found A history of voilence to be rather dull and highly predictable. I thought he'd done much better films

Batman was enjoyable, but I felt a little sloppy towards the end. Sin City on the other hand was a great film... but not one that made me want to go back and watch it again

Never heard of good night of the aristocrats either. Not that that nullifies their quality, just that they don't rate on my radar because I never saw them.

Havn't seen it myself yet, but honestly.. I assume this was a 'vote for your film of the year online' type thing.. it's the same kind of thing that caused Empire to broadcast the crazed notion that all three LOTR films and Star Wars ep. 2 should all be in the top 10 films of all time.

Serenity may well be enjoyable - I'm sure I'll love it when I get around to watching it, but proclaiming something 'film of the year' should rely on more criteria than 'I liked it because of all the gags and explosions'

*nods* Yes, it was a viewer vote.

If loaded247.com weren't idiots, I'd have Serenity on DVD by now. It had been sitting on the order page for ages so when I mailed them on Wednesday I got a reply saying that something with my credit card details must be wrong because the card kept getting denied. The didn't think necessary to inform me of this (either via the website or by email), oh no.
It finally got dispatched yesterday but hasn't arrived yet which means I should hopefully have it Tuesday. Or not.
Not sure if I'm going to use them again but they do have good deals on Region 1 DVDs as they come out.

Hmm, I enjoyed Serenity, even Lucy enjoyed it and she isn't the world's biggest SciFi fan, but I agree with the others here, it isn't film of the year. Then again maybe it hasn't been a great year for films ... however IMO Sin City was better.
