How did they get Derek Jacobi to accept a role in Underworld: Evolution? He must have been desperate...

Two words: Professional thespian. It's his job. Plus, the buzz tends to be that trashy movies are more fun to make.

Well, yes. TBH, it actually looks quite good. Switch off brain, enjoy the ride again.

British actors are notable for their presence in crap films 'cause they stand out from the rest of their quality/oscar winning/OBE gaining work. American actors on the other hand....

So much mickey-taking...

What Sally calls a Conservatory film. In that the script arrived the day an SO was saying "Honey, we really need some money to cover the cost of a new conservatory..."

Heh. Well, at least he'll add some class. Although Bill Nighy is quite good, too, and I never say no to Kate Beckinsale's arse in PVC. ;o)

I remember watching the first film and, as Viktor regenerated, thinking: Blimey - that make-up's making this guy look Bill Nighy!

And who wouldn't?

Besides, Underworld was a good film IMO, and I'm looking forward to the first of two sequals.

There are several reasons why quality British Actors take movies- trust me, I've talked to several agents on this one...
1- Location. Steven Berkof made 'Under the Cherry Moon' so he could stay on the south coast of France; some say that one or two of the actors made The Beach PURELY because of the location...
2- Cash. As said before. For the lolly. But NOT that big a reason.
3- Work Ethic. When Micheal Caine was asked why he made some of the movies he made (Jaws3D anyone) he replied that he was an actor- you don't turn down work. The old school actors WORK- and they do not refuse work. The idea of being a 'star' is alien to them- Jacobi, Hoskins, Micheal York, Dench, MANY others fall into this.
A few years ago (aboit six before LotR) Ian Mckellen turned up at an Oscar night show (BBC I believe) and was famous for being acidic, gay and above all, a BITCH- his famous one liner, which denotes one of the most powerful reasons why British film stars keep working... "You can tell the differance between a Film Star and an actor- when they make an acceptance speech a film star leans into the microphone to be heard- an actor merely projects his voice!". (Savage, harsh and TRUE! Watch every awards eceremony- spot the actors and mere 'film stars')
Bottom line- an actor ALWAYS acts. Work is work.
4- Love of Director/Art. A student made a 25 minute graduation film recently. She just sent the script to John Hurt in idle speculation. He did it. SEVERAL big British actors will do 'Charity Work' (work for small companies/new people to help) Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are good patrons in this area, and oddly enough- the BBC is seen as 'charity work'. The sheer number of actors who will do work for them at seriously reduced fees...

Many thanks for these insights from the horse's mouth.
Ian McKellen rocks in many ways.
I was similarly surprised to see Judy Dench in the Chronicles of Riddick but she was superb.
