There are two gigs I'm considering in Cambridge in January:
Richard Thompson and Nick Cave, both at the Corn Exchange.
I'm definitely going to see the former, I think but the latter I have to think about really hard. I'm not a big fan (only own a best of album) but I appreciate his music and I've heard good things about his live act.
Here comes the deciding factor: A ticket for RT is 17.50 and for NC it's 35! At the same venue! They're both quite low key in terms of equipmen/tech so the actual running costs of the two gigs can't be much different (RT is solo and NC will have a small band but still).

NC probably wants more money :) also - ticket prices are based on how famous - therefore how many people will want to see - the band. You can only sell a maximum of X tickets, so what are people willing to pay?

17.50 / 1 = 17.50
35 / 1+x =/= 35

The "small band" will want paying too remember, figuring there's atleast 3 of them it's probably relative pricing.

Hm, yes but I'm not sure if it works that way.
The Fairport Convention only charge 15 and there's five band members.
[livejournal.com profile] belak_krin's explanation is probably more fitting. Still grrrr.
Gigs slowly become unaffordable.
When I was at Uni I went to a gig every month, sometimes several. I couldn't afford it these days and I'm actually employed now...

...and we walked 15 miles in the snow, though we didn't have any shoes, and it was uphill both ways....

:D

I saw Richard Thompson a year or so ago, pretty damn good. He did have a small band, and there's always the other people in the band that need paying.

So yeah, Nick Cave is just profiteering.

I swear that in the space of a few years ticket prices have doubled for gigs on average though. Very disappointing.

I think it's a solo tour. Booked it now.

As a fan of his, I've seen Nick Cave solo and with the Bad Seeds a number of times over the years and always enjoyed it. Even I'm not going to see him this time due to the price and a know a number of other long time fans who feel the same. The price is double what Diamanda Galas was at the Concert hall in Glasgow. I just feel enough is enough, and concerts of the likes of Nick Cave are becoming the preserve of yuppies who want to appear slightly cool rather than the real fans.

Life's so unfair. I am a fan of Cave but I'll be in Australia whilst he's over here. Grrrr
