If you belong to the Telephone Preference Service which I recommend as it gets rid of bloody double glazing people too, you can sic em with "Where did you get this number from? This is an ex-directory number registered with the Telephpone Preference Service, so you are in breach of the Telemarketing Code when making this call." Or similar.

They disappear during this process and generally don't call back. I've only ever had one repeat offender, because they use a random number generator.

I am usually nice and say I don't have the time first, but if they are persistent / rude this gets rid of them.

Brilliant! Here on the other side of the pond telemarketers are almost a sub-culture. Usually, if you pretend that you are in the middle of some lewd sex act that they are so rudely interrupting, they get antsy. If you tell them to keep talking because it's cheaper than the $.99/minute rate you normally pay, they hang up and take you off the list. :-)
