Forgot to include something in today's update:

On my back from the Kambar, there were three black girls walking along Petty Cury singing one of those African harmony songs. They had beautiful voices and were singing perfectly. Made a nice difference to the usual drunken louts shouting abuse at the world in general. I was smiling all the way to my car.

I've had a similar experience on a train back from London, albeit with four drunken Irish, who maintained remarkably close harmony given the amount of booze they were putting away. Reeeee-markable.

I've met very few Irish or black people who couldn't hold a tune. Seems to be in the blood.

I always assumed it was a cultural thing, actually. Ooooh, nature vs nurture...

Aren't the two related?
Even in a culture in which music plays a big role you need the talent to sing/make music.
