For two missionaries to row across together, leaving one behind, there needs to be exactly one cannibal on the right bank. If there were two, then the left behind missionary gets eaten. If zero, then the two rowing missionaries will get eaten when they get to the other side.

So, at some point you need

CC ~ ~ MMM C.

That's quite easy to get to, and it's straightforward from there.

Yeah; once you twig that a cannibal in a boat with a missionary will eat his co-pilot instantly on arrival at a bank with only cannibals, rather than them having to getr out of the boat first, it's a cakewalk.
