According to [livejournal.com profile] corone, it's out (at least at GenCon) and looking shiny.
I assume it'll be available in the shops in the next couple of weeks, then.

all I can find about a release date is end of september sadly. Though there is due to be a 24 page intro pdf on their website sometime soon-ish

Well, [livejournal.com profile] corone had the book in his hands when he arrived in Indy and they'll be selling it at the GenCon trade hall so I'm assuming it'll be generally available after that.

So, maybe I'm the pot calling the kettle black, former Mr 'It must be mine' as I am, but I'm not sure about this. From my experience of licensed RPGs, I have to wonder what would the Serenity RPG give you that you couldn't get from a decent generic system and the Firefly boxed set? Aside, perhaps, from a set of canonised interpretations of the setting that you might well not agree with?

I guess it's easier to buy this book than having to collect/research all the background info yourself.

See, having looked at the Stargate SG-1 RPG, I don't know that I'd agree, particularly not with a background as fundamentally fluid as that of a Joss Whedon series. I liked the Buffy RPG, but I realised fairly quickly - although not before I'd picked up a couple of sourcebooks for it - that given the cinematic Unisystem rules and a couple of examples to give an idea of play balance, I could have done the whole thing out myself.

But Stargate, yes; I had a look in the shop and I just disagreed with so many of the decisions made in composing the rule sets and background that I didn't bother. I reject a Stargate RPG, for example, that doesn't distinguish between scholar and scientist. The four ket roles in Stargate are: Soldier, Scientist, Scholar, Alien; these should in some sense be reflected in the class system of the game, if it has one. More importantly, just skim reading a couple of pages of background turned up so many instances where I aggressively disliked their interpretation that I knew if I wanted to run an SG-1 RPG, I'd be better off spinning my own.

Is there an actual release date yet? My local gaming hsop knows absolutely nothing about it.

Mind you they had never seen or heard of firefly either; so that says it all really.

Yes, it's out this week. It was on today's new releases mail from Leisure Games so should be in the shops by Thursday or so.
If it helps, it's by Margaret Weis Productions but any wholesale distributor should have it.

her website doesn't have a release date listed either, and serenityrpg.com is still MIA; which is why I asked.

leisuregames.com. They should update the website with the new releases today. The mailing list (http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/new-releases/) is usually quicker.
Angus usually posts to usenet (uk.games.roleplay) as well.
