Got up with sunshine streaming through my windows, had breakfast, got ready and ... it rained, so left the D70 at home. I probably got have gotten in some cool candid shots of people and bands at the fair but I think it would have encumbered me too much.
Got there at about 12:30 and wandered around, watched a funky/jazzy band on the Future Stage, quickly waved to
raggedy_man, Paul D and family, had goat curry from one of the Carribbean stalls, watched a very good outfit playing what would have been called "devil's music" in Ray Charles time (i.e. Soul/Rythmn&Blues with Spiritual/Gospel lyrics).
After walking blindly past them a couple of times, I finally found
puddingcat,
raggedy_man and
nannyo (nice to meet you!) so we wandered around, sat, chatted, listened to music, had food, were talked at by drunken louts (*groan*) and generally had a good time.
Finally I managed to see two fantastic bands. The first were Die Away From Me on the Future Stage who played not sad trad goth as their name might suggest but some very modern Rock/Funk crossover with a brilliant bassist. The other brill band were on my way home on the Green Area stage: The Rude Mechanicals. Very hard to describe. It's not punk, not funk, not rock but all of it at the same time, quite avantgarde and hard to describe. A bit like PJ Harvey doing funk/blues but not quite. The female singer wore a gigantic wig and masklike makeup and the other musicians were similarly odd.
Then a very funny thing happened. While waiting for the bus in Milton Road, a couple sat next to me and she said something like "the bus should be coming soon" and for some inexplicable reason she, he and I started singing/mumbling to ourselves "I hear the train a comin', it's rollin' 'round the bend...". Then we looked and grinned at each other and proceeded to sing Folsom Prison Blues. Very bizarre.
Off to bed now, UA tomorrow, yeah!
