Taken with the f1.4 50mm in RAW mode. At a pub, not posed, just random character shots from the vamp game.

Thank you very much!
The best £175 (almost half of new price for a 5 month old lens) I've ever spent...

Yeah, the quality difference of the new lense is really astounding. Go Ozzy!

Not that the kit lens isn't good quality, it just doesn't cope well with low light conditions.
Shooting RAW also makes a difference as you don't get any losses due to conversion and compression.

Yes, Lord. I hear and will obey.
Those voices in the head again.

Er, not quite, rather "Oh *insert name of deity*, give me strength so I don't jump across the table and rip his f*cking head off". ;o)

The colour representation of the D70 is great in the first place but with the high aperture lens it gets enough light to really do its thing.
I am a very happy bunny. :o)

I've never been quite sure how RAW differs from other image file types. I have it installed in Photoshop (Elements), but haven't used it. And my camera only uses jpg unfortunately.

As the name suggests, it's raw data, as recorded by the sensor. JPGs are converted and compressed, a process during which you always lose some information. The better the optics and the sensor of the camera, the bigger the difference between jpg and RAW will be.

Another consideration is memory, a RAW file is about 1.5 times the file size of a full quality JPG so you need a big card in your camera.
There's a similar analogy in analog photography. There's no point in using a high quality, professional film in a point and shoot camera because you won't see much difference to a standard off-the-shelf film.

Thanks, this is very helpful. I don't tend to think of the obvious (like RAW actually meaning RAW!) That makes a lot of sense. One day maybe I'll be able to afford a good camera. Mine is great for some things, but I really need something that is fast for wildlife photography which is what I enjoy most.
