Do people in the UK dye and hide easter eggs (i.e. real, hard-boiled eggs) for their children to find?
When I hear easter eggs, I first think of the coloured real ones, not chocolate.

We do the hiding bit with chocolate eggs, sometimes. I remember occasionally my mother used to let us draw on boiled eggs with food colouring and give them to us for breakfast (= two very hyperactive children for the next twelve hours!) but the colourful ones weren't the hidden ones.

Having an egg hunt is definitely something people are aware of, but it wouldn't be usual to combine that with decorated real eggs. People would usually hunt for small chocolate eggs, I think.

People of my parent's generation would almost certainly have done this. Also, my sister has some decorated eggs in her display cabinet that I believe are what used to be called 'Pace eggs'. These are hardboiled and decorated and then were rolled along the street outside the house at Easter for some pagan purpose :)

This was a northern tradition, my parents both being from County Durham, but here in Worcestershire you don't see it.

Oh, I'm sure people decorate eggs - we used to sometimes when I was little - but if people hold an egg hunt the eggs would usually be chocolate, I think.

We do odd things with decorated eggs as well like going out to a field or meadow and throw them up as high as you can and hope they don't break. Or each person takes an egg and bashes it against the other's (first tip against tip then end against end), the person with a completely bashed egg is the loser.

we paint/decorate eggs and then roll them... think it's to symbolise rolling the stone away... but easter egg hunts don't tend to be done with the real eggies... what if you forget where one was hidden and it doesn't get found? But chocolate ones get hidden or even little plastic eggs with small gifts in..

I think its more a people here used to but its rather rare these days, its something I'd read about in childrens books when I was a kid (before they banned all the good books for being politically incorrect) and some of the country places and church groups around where I grew up still did it but its definately something rather old fashioned these days I think, most people going for chocolate egg hunts and the like, though occasionally you get local news stories on egg rolling events and so forth, though where you'd do that around cambridge is beyond me.. castle hill? mill road railway bridge?

*grins* True. Cambs isn't really ideal for activities requiring a hill of sorts.

My Slovene housemate is currently dying a bunch of eggs using red onion skins.

I remember colouring eggs with watercolour pencils when I was at school once, but that's it.
