I just wanted to get the Melissa Etheridge/Joss Stone duet from the Grammies award so I downloaded iTunes but it tells me it's not available in the UK store. Is it possible to connect to the US store and if so, how? Or would some kind US friend be able to get it for me?

Thanks in advance!

You can't purchase from the US store, and you can't get someone from the US to download it for you, because apple's bastard DRM won't let it play on your machine.

*shakes head*
I am more than happy to fork out money for this, especially as all the proceeds go to charity but I can't fucking do it because they have other ideas.
And then they wonder why people go the illegal route...

I do hope it's going to end up on a compilation somewhere.

Yup.
It's the bastard DRM that stops me from going with iTunes. Otherwise they would have a customer.

It's also the bastard DRM on the iPod that stops me buying one of those too; there's no way I'm buying an mp3 player that won't play anything bought from any service other than iTunes.

So all in all, that leaves me with the only accessible route to the music I want to download being from grey area P2P

An iPod will play stuff from other online shops; at least mine does.

As for the whole DRM thing with buysing a song from another country. Get someone inthe US to buy the track, burn it onto a CD as an audio track and re-rip it as lossless. You shouldn't lose too much int he way of quality and it'll then play without the DRM/country problems ;)

So why is Rhapsody constantly trying to bypass the iPod firmware in order to allow it's customers to use an iPod for stuff they bought on Rhapsody?

If it's playing stuff from other services, whatever you do, don't connect it to the iTunes player, and for the love of god, never allow it to update the firmware.

don't know, but the Rhapsody website doesn't mention anything about that issue in it's FAQ or help sections; it only seems to mention the ipod crashing occasionally if you try to start a transfer immediately after opening the Rhapsody software as well. Granted, I've not actually used their service as I prefer CD to digital media.

As for itunes and the updates... I'm on the latest versions of both *shrug*

Well there's a lot of issues at the moment about Fairplay being really bastarly with Apple being real gits. They release a new version, and things stop working if they're not from iTunes. Then the other providers scramble to sidestep the limitations, and Apple breaks in in the next update.

I'm expecting legal problems for them in the EU.

I think some watchdog board in the UK (I forget who) is in the process of bringing a court case against iTunes for price fixing and charging different amounts in different countries, so the whole DMR/country specific/vendor specific things will probably be raised in that case

I expect so.
The whole fiasco has seriously turned me off to Apple though. I can't see them as any less greedy then Microsoft any more, and I can't condone their business practices any more than I can with the Gates Empire.

They still have the best industrial and user design though, and I'd still like a Mac as a graphics workstation.

Just not as much as I once did.

I will get your song for you, somewhat legally. I will pay for a download and convert it to MP3, then send it to you. I will then delete it from my computer. I'll do it later today. :)
