Is/was this real? Rainbow TV episode
As I've never seen it, I can't tell if it really was that bad.
There might be a little too much innuendo and muppets are easy to dub.

My guess would be it's a pretty good fake.

AFAICR the singers were Rod, Jane, and Freddy. Calling Freddy Roger is probably a reference to the earlier Captain Pugwash urban legend (cf "Roger the Cabin Boy" who was, I believe, called Jim).

It is genuine, but as has already been said, was filmed as a joke for a more mature audience.
Apart from everything else, an episode of Rainbow was a little bit longer.

As Jonnyargles says, this is actually "real", in that it is the real cast, but it was written by one of the voiceover artists as a skit for the Thames Christmas party.

Googling brings the following quote:

"Although often introduced as the unaired pilot, this episode was actually specially made by the team at Thames Television. Geoffrey Hayes told us, "The VT department of each ITV company, every Christmas had a competition to enter all the outtakes from their particular companies programme output, and see which ones were the funniest. But ours wasn't an outtake, we specially did it. It was specially scripted and we did it and I never saw it! We did it and Thames won it, but what they actually won, I don't know. But I never saw the video. I can't remember much about it except for Zippy with a banana." The script was written by the voice of Zippy and George; Roy Skelton."
