My only commentary re the US
3 Nov 2004 10:13 pmis actually a more generic one, something I always found annoying.
It's the phrase "God bless America".
Correct me if I'm wrong but the US constitution grants freedom of religion. Hence, any government should be completely neutral in that regard. This "God bless America" and similar phrases are a slap in the face of any non-Christian, be they of another faith or choose not to have a faith. I choose myself what to believe in, thank you very much, and I will vote for a candidate I think has what it takes to make a difference and govern a country properly. Their faith (or private life, sexual orientation and other personal issues) isn't important to me at all.
It's very similar to the crucifixes in German (or at least Bavarian) classrooms.
Oh, and what about the rest of the world?

Date: 3/11/04 10:48 pm (UTC)We promise, by law, to not allow Government to interfere with Religion.
We have screwed up royally, and allwed Religion to influence Government as much as it possibly can. If this election hasn't cemented the facts, we are not a tolerant nation. We are a "christian" nation. And much like the Crusades, we are at war with the Muslim nations. It is not an open war, but a cold war, colder even than with the Soviets.
I truly feel that if there was another landmass like America that we could discover, the "left wing" members of America would have no problem dashing to it to form a new, utopian nation of true tolerance. I honestly feel that we may be on the cusp of a cultural civil war within the next 10-15 years.
