I just saw Victorian Underworld, er Van Helsing and loved it!
I went in expecting it to be cheese on a stick and corny as hell and that was what I got, from beginning to end.
[livejournal.com profile] twentypence and [livejournal.com profile] robinbloke, you forgot to mention Star Wars, Indiana Jones, the LotR films and especially The Fearless Vampire Killers as references, the latter actually being the existent vampire film it was closest to, strangely enough. Mainly because of Carl and the balllroom scene, I guess.
Cool costumes and Kate Beckinsale still has a nice arse. :o)

Also saw two trailers of films I've been waiting for for a while now: The fantastic looking Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and Chronicles of Riddick aka Pitch Black 2. Troy didn't get my attention much and I don't think I'll go and watch The Day After Tomorrow either.

[livejournal.com profile] rotwang saw it last night, described it to me, and I told him it sounded like an EE freeform. He said "Pretty much exactly, although the plots were even less believable and the special effects were better."

That pretty much sums it up. :o)
Hang on, I played an eerie undertaker in one, didn't I? ;o)

Just like Underworld was a high-budget version of a Cam game. ;o)

I think you did, yes. Or a corpse. Or both. ;)

Ah, fond memories. Are EE going to be present at this year's UK GenCon?

We certainly are; we have titles and blurbs and everything. I'm holding off on doing a public announcement until I've had some clarification on the actual arrangements from Karim (like, can we handle our own booking this year, and when are the slots?)

Excellent, looking forward to that!
Yes, I've been waiting for a generic info pack to arrive for quite a while now. February my arse.

Millennium Moon have cunningly got around that by announcing which slots we'll be running our games in and then seeing if we get them :)

Well, I've written the blurbs as though we'll have our usual Friday and Saturday afternoon slots, but I don't want to tell people for sure that that's when they are until it's set in, if not stone, at least rapidly-hardening concrete. Having to give people the runaround on times and locations pisses everyone off and loses us players (and having to move location in the middle of a game, as at the last UK GenCon, is even more irritating)

It's a fight every year to get the slots that people want, even though the players expect certain things in certain slots it seems that the Gencon organisers don't seem to get that without serious shoving.

They've opened a LARP forum on the Gencon website (and that took some work from me to get). Every year they do pretty well at making us feel that bit superfluous whihc, given that LARP gets more players than the headline events like the Open, makes me feel rather irritable.

We haven't had problems in the last few years with slots, but then again we are generally running smaller things than MM (and also consistent numbers of games), so are less tied to the larger spaces. From what Karim's said, it sounds like some of the really large spaces are going to be off-limits during the evening (because there are going to be non-GC events in them), which could make life difficult for the larger games.

I don't know; I think last year was the only recent year when I've really wanted to strangle some of the organisers for making bad choices and being unable to plan. The year in Manchester, we had rooms in which to run which were essentially unfindable, which was a pain.

You tend to have to fight and dictate to karim what you want/need, which is frustrating. He tries to help as much as he can, but sometimes I have to wonder when he shows us a 10'x10' room to fit 200 players into.

Yeah, this is why we find it easier; we're running for 36 or fewer, so we're only needing a room that'll fit 40 or so, rather than 200...

You're forgetting the Aliens scenes with the face hugger babies.

Ugh, its not everyday that I get to Mystery Science Theater 3 Thousand a move during the opening weekend.

They reminded me much more of Gremlins. :o)
Which is my mind-numbed state provided much amusement as I started humming the Gremlins tune and doing silly impressions.

Never having seen the Fearless Vampire Killers that might explain why I missed that one off.

I didn't notice any particular bits that reminded me of Star Wars, Indiana Jones or LotR, which ones were those?

Indiana Jones I did mention, the hat - always with his hat for one thing :)

Indiana Jones would never give his hat to a woman, though.

I guess it did.
Take the best action films of our time... blend together, scrape off the cream that rises to the top and serve the remainder. :o)

Watch it when you can, it's repeated often enough on TCM, Paramount and other channels. Made by Roman Polanski in the late 60s, taking the micky out of the Hammer films.

Star Wars: When VH and Beckinsale swing over the chasm. All that was missing was the kiss for luck. Also in the final fight when Dracula says something about working together.
Indiana Jones: Some stunts/action scenes and the travelling map.
LotR: Mostly setting and atmosphere. D's castle (the one at the end) looked like Barad Dur, everytime his machinery stuff was shown, the music was very reminiscent of the Saruman/Orthanc theme.

You know, it's amazing really, you keep reminding me of all these bits and I remember making comments on them at the time. I guess my mind is currently doing it's usual trick of carefully erasing traumatic memories to make my life happier. :o)

Forgot X-Men, when VH extends his claws in the final fight. Well, Hugh Jackman is Wolverine so I guess he got the roles mixed up a bit...
