It's not my usual style of film but I really enjoyed it. Although I haven't been to Japan myself, I think that the film is a rather accurate portrayal of Japan and how lost Westerners feel there. The fact that no subtitles were used only emphasized this (there wouldn't be any subtitles in real life, either).
The plot itself is basic but not the main part of the movie, anyway. The characters and the situations they find themselves in are far more important and were portrayed brilliantly.

I enjoyed the film until the last 15 minutes when things seemed rushed and inconclusive. I hate not being in on the plot. It let the rest of the film down for me.

Mel appreciated it more than me because he has travelled in the far east, and has had thoses inane phone calls home!

You could have written all those areas of the script from transcripts of our phone calls, but at least you've never FedExed me carpet samples!

True, the end was a bit odd. Still, it's realistic, Bob had a schedule/wife&kids to go back to and Charlotte her husband. I think it would have been a bit OTT if they had both left their lives behind and run into the sunset together.

Yeah.. it raises an interesting question..

I did like this movie. It wasn't terribly exciting, but it was very well done. Almost like a little slice of life.

Anyhow, the question.. How many "harmless" friendships do people make when away? How many times do people think "Wow, at another time.." but manage to behave themselves and head back to real life, whatever tehy're wishing?

Quite a few I think. Which made it rather real and interesting.

Of course, the "Lip my stockings!" part had me rolling.

The question

I'm with you there. Yes, there have been situations at e.g. ICC when I thought exactly that but never followed it through in the slightest as a relationship afterwards would be impossible.

Unlike other people who go to ICC... ;o)

What might also be interesting, is to take a poll of people who felt wistful for the man's chances at something, even while married.

HmmMMmm..
