I don't seem to be infected. I had the symptoms but running the XP patch fixed that and I can't find any of the indications of the Blaster/Lovsan worm on my laptop (the registry change for instance). Updated AVG again and checked on their website that this virus was included in the latest update (12th of August).

Phew.

Everything seems to be a litte handwavey about what this virus can do. (I really need to get me some antivirus software!)

On XP, it cause the system to shut down (which you can suppress). The real danger is that it will create an access point to your computer so whoever ran the virus sees what you've got and can do damage.
So it's not damaging itself but can be used to damage your computer after it's running on the system.

hmmm. not getting system shut down, but IE refuses to stay open... Will do a scan tonight with my new sparkly AV software. *fingers crossed!*

Make sure you have the most up-to-date virus database, it's only a couple of days old so an AV software bought off the shelf won't recognise it.
