Tiring day at work and then a colleague had a great idea: As part of the Cambridge Film Festival, the Picturehouse showed The Soul of a Man, a documentary by Wim Wenders (usually boring German arthouse director) about the life and works of three Blues legends: Blind Willie Johnson, Skip James and J.B. Lenoir, containing original footage/recordings, reenacted scenes and live tributes by current artists. Really not bad, very interesting and classic blues.

Going through the programme while waiting I spotted that Standing in the Shadows of Motown was on as well, so I got a ticket for that as I had seen a trailer and really wanted to see it.
It's again a documentary/live music film about The Funk Brothers, the unknown studio musicians who provided the sound for all the Motown hits. Absolutely fantastic music and a very interesting insight into how Motown worked, up til its bitter end.
Quote "... where deadly grooves threatened to set the walls on fire", heh.

Yay!

I saw the Double DVD by chance at the alternative clothing/music sale in town today and for 11.99 (which would be a very good price for a CD, let alone a double DVD), I couldn't say no.

Closest I could get to seeing her live after that fantastic night in munich in '92 or '93 (I can't remember when exactly). The version of Like the Way I Do she played there just blew me away. Kevin McCormick was still playing bass then, ever since he left, her music is lacking something, especially live, so a solo concert is a great idea.
At the Munich gig, Melissa played a sort of duel with him which prompted the quote "this guy can do more with four strings than I can with twelve" ;o)

If you get the chance to see those documentaries, take it.
