Holiday diary, part one
8 Jul 2003 11:19 pmHurrah, internet connection! Bought modem cable and connected it to the phone network after data jack wouldn't work and it does work!
Friday, 4/7
Was late for work due to stupid traffic but made headway in project so all is good.
Taxi to bus station, and stuck in traffic on bus until out of Cambridge. Clear til Stansted, though.
Long wait at airline desk because of stupid operator and fuckwits barging in (apparently, he didn't have a ticket before). I had loads of time and didn't see the point in arguing with him so I left it.
Another huge queue to get to the departure lounge. No searches, though, I didn't even have to open or switch on my laptop.
Had decadent dinner at the Seafood Bar because I felt like it (Gravadlax), oogled at the TVR which you could enter a competition for, the ticket price a snip at £55. Bah. It was the wrong colour, anyway. Nice curves, though. Mmmmm.
Am now sitting at the gate, flight should be called in 25 minutes. Will continue to read OotP, so far (p 217), so good.
Flight on time and uneventful. However, I'd been had. I'd asked for a window seat and sat at a bit where there was no window, just a wall :o/. Oh well, for £ 64 return you can't really complain, especially as there was drink and food as well.
Landed, passed through passport control and my suitcase was right there. Met parents and exchanged news on the two hour drive home. Found out that my aunt who's only in her mid-sixties had fractured her femur after a simple fall, due to osteoporosis :o(
Other than that, I should have my living room when I get home for Xmas, my dad is working like mad, breaking in a new door so I can access it from the landing, removing 90 years worth of plaster, paint and wallpaper and so on. I'll inherit my parents' old living room suite and will finally have room to put my desk, telly and other things I had in Nuremberg somewhere where I can use them so I can watch what I want and don't have to fight with my parents.
Obviously, I didn't get the chance to do Kinder der Nacht, as I couldn't meet up with people.
Saturday, 5/7
Weather is quite dismal, cloudy and rainy, probably won't be doing much apart from reading OotP (p. 297 now).
And I didn't, watched a bit of TV, though. Gods, German dubbed ENT and VOY are bad and the voices are so wrong (as are any other dubbed series or films, how did I cope while I was still living here?).
Sunday, 6/7
Weather still grey and dreary.
Went to nice lunch for uncle's birthday (I had venison in a thick gravy with fresh Chanterelle mushrooms with Spätzle and cranberry sauce, yum) and spent the rest of the day watching TV and reading OotP (p. 554 now, still quite good, thoughts and things to follow in a separate post).
Took pictures of house and surroundings as well, will post those soon.
Monday, 7/7
Annoyed about goth accusations in the newspaper, more reading.
When I'm finished tonight, hopefully, I'll start with the Tales scenario and characters for NURD on the weekend.
Will go into town to take more photos and see what the reopened department store has to offer tomorrow.
Finished OotP, read about it here.
Tuesday, 8/7
Wearing black trenchcoats means you want to shoot people, at least if you believe the newspapers (the story about the thwarted school shooting in the US).
Today, the sun is blazing and according to the weather forecast, this is supposed to last til next week. Argh. Couldn't it simply get a bit nicer without being stupidly hot again? Let's hope it's not too hot so I can go into town this afternoon.
Just got my Tales from the Floating Vagabond stuff from the attic to reread. Wow, hand-drawn floor plans on hexpaper, handwritten notes and handouts, those were the times when you didn't do everything on the computer. *grins*
Went into town and took some photos (will upload sometime this week) and bought a modem cable.
Met my old mate Stefan for dinner, got home, watched TV for a bit and tried the internet connection.
