Church hit by lightning after preacher asked for sign

The best bit being
"services resumed for about 20 minutes until the congregation realized the church was on fire"

Reminds me of a storm in Cambridge some time back, where the only damage done was a tree that landed on our school chaplain's car. No one else sustained any damage, and the insurance wouldn't pay because they said it was an act of God. Hahaha

Funny, we were discussing the possibilities of being able to sue God in the pub last Friday (with a Law graduate and a Biblical Studies graduate). Given the amount of damage He's supposedly responsible for, what would you get out of Him, and how would He pay anyway?

Whether the tale's been exaggerated or not, this is my favourite ecclesiastical-coincindence story.

Having studied religious studies and law, my opinion would be:

1. You wouldn't get any money out of him for public policy reasons

2. You would have to prove that he acted deliberately or negligently
2.1 to prove that he acted negligently, you would have to show that no reasonable god would have acted in that way
2.2 if he acted deliberately, you would have to be able to show that he acted wrongly or illegitimately
2.2.1 you can only try a person according to the laws of the jurisdiction where he acted (now, where would that be?)
2.2.2 even if you had a case against him, courts are reluctant to impose sentences when there is no way of them being enforced. How would you enforce an order against God?
2.3. Only natural or legal persons/ entities can be tried. Does God fall into this category?

3. As for how he would pay, well, how about indulgences, life in paradise, long life, pretty wife, children, etc. Or gold oranything else for that matter, I mean, he is omnipotent after all...

My biggest worry is one of the stories in the sidebar

"Gas Prices Expected To Remain At Current Levels"

Wow. Did that knock Man Found Asleep back onto Page 2?
