of recent CDs:
Tanzwut - Ihr wolltet Spaß
Have been waiting for this new album for quite some time and have to say I'm a bit disappointed. There are only three or four tracks which are really superb. Mind you, the rest is still great stuff but nothing that makes me jump up and bounce around like mad. They moved more towards rock than industrial as well. Also, bagpipes, shawns and flutes are still there but they've sadly moved to the background a bit.
Subway to Sally - Herzblut
This is the 2001 album of the band that started off the medieval crossover trend in Germany or at least made it popular.
Good solid stuff, nothing bad, nothing extraordinary, either. Good work.
Subway to Sally - Engelskrieger
The new album. StS have gone a different direction on this one. No more medieval ballads with heavy guitars but solid metal with a little medieval influences. A lot of fans have been really disappointed with this one but I don't mind really as their stuff got a bit samey after five albums. Still very good vocals with German lyrics which have been updated as well and tackle current topics.
Apocalyptica - Reflections
The new album (so far only available in Europe). Those of you who were at the gig know what to expect. No covers (metal or classic) this time but only their own compositions, ranging from heavy metal type numbers to classical tunes. Highly recommended.
Finisterra - Als die Erde eine Scheibe war
More medieval power folk (You should have guessed I'm really into this kind of music by now ;o). Taking new traditional songs from the 14th to 16th century in their style or their own songs with both traditional instruments and electric/electronic ones. Solid stuff and a lot more varied than Schandmaul who are a bit repetitive in their songs, especially the vocals.
Must get the other album from them.
Des Geyers Schwarzer Haufen - Balladen über Liebe, Leben und Tod
Traditional medieval music without modern instruments. This album contains only ballads written by Francois Villon, the French minstrel. Very mellow, ideal campfire music with slightly saucy lyrics.
Nitzer Ebb - That Total Age
Classic industrial from the late 80s (contains Murderous and Join in the Chant)
Unheilig - Das 2. Gebot
I blame amazon for recommending this. I listened to the sound bites, liked it and haven't been disappointed.
Solo project by a bloke who calls himself "Der Graf" (The Count). Music is a more gothic version of Rammstein but softer and bleepier. I was lucky to get the limited first edition with a second CD with extra songs and two remixes of Maschine, the best track on the album.
This is probably the most obscure album in the list but at the same time the one most people here would like.
And videos/DVDs
Zoolander
Simple comedy with a load of cameos. I'm usually not a fan of this kind of film as they tend to be too shallow but this one is great because it doesn't take itself seriously and is very cynical about the whole Hollywood/fashion scene.
The One
Transdimensional futuristic thriller with Jet Li and a couple of reasonable fight scenes (actually quite disappointing for Li's standards). The tricks/effects are unrealistic and OTT, similar to the Matrix but they don't make sense as they aren't explained (just extra strength/power, not warping of reality).
Little thing for the goths out there, the guards in the transdimensional facility are all wearing silver New Rocks ;o)
Invincible
Another thriller produced by Jet Li. Starts with a Manga-y plot but deteriorates into a quite painful film. The fight scenes aren't really that good and the plot would be laughed at by most roleplayers. Still reasonably enjoyable as it's quite pretty and at places so bad it's funny.
My Little Eye
A couple of teens are hired to spend six months in a remote cabin, watched by webcams, Big Brother style. A bit boring at first until the plot thickens and it actually gets quite harsh.
Kiss of the Dragon
Decent martial arts thriller with Jet Li. Very good fight scenes and the trick with the needles is nice and adds a little oriental obscurity. Good action movie, quite gory as well.
Swordfish
Big action movie with good tricks, starring John Travolta as the bad guy, Hugh Jackman as the good guy and Hale Berry as eye candy. Oh, it has Vinnie Jones in it, as well. Slightly unrealisitic espionage/hacker/computer crime thriller (hacking is just that, random hacking on the keyboard).
I still can't decide which arse is more attractive, Hale Berry's or that of Gabriel's TVR. Mmmm, curves...
