I first heard of fractals in 1975 when I was ten. Some of us had extra maths classes with the headmaster in junior school. He taught us to draw them on paper using recursive methods. The next time I came across them I used fractals in a post-graduate study of turbulence modelling. I used them to model sub-grid stresses. So when Mandelbrot was in town for a visit I went along to see him talk at the Methodist Central Hall, just across the road from where I now work. I've been there three times now, for a comic fair, to see Mandelbrot and to listen to our new coalition ministers Cable and Willets. Unfortunately, of these three, Mandelbrot was the least interesting.

Big brains don't necessarily have to be the best speakers/interesting people.

A fitting memorial. Mathematics & Science is a little less now, let's hope someone new can do as much in the field.
