The Hobbit in Russia

Completely different illustration style to what we're used to but I really like it. They remind me of my granddad's woodcuts and something you'd expect in classic sagas (Ring of the Nibelung etc.), not modern fantasy.

Excellent -- I can imagine that if I'd first read it as a kid with those illustrations, my impression might have been quite different.

In Soviet Russia, the Ring wears you!

The illustrations remind me a lot of Tove Jannsens Moomins books.

Those are superb. In some respects, I'd rank that among the best Tolkien artwork I've ever seen (although I'm not quite sure about Bilbo being furry (and presumably nude!) from the waist down!

I was also put in mind of the Nibelungenlied, partly by the style in general (totally appropriate given how much of Norse myth Tolkien ripped off wholesale), and partly because of the way Thorin looks just like the avaricious little swine he was!
