There might be indications that Betelgeuse, the ninth biggest and ninth brightest star in the known/observable 'verse is on its way to go supernova, possibly within the next few months or even weeks (obv. this is the observation of the supernova that will have happened over 500 years ago as the light takes that long to get here - there is no precise measurement for how far away the star actually is).

This blog post collects a few facts and thoughts on the matter.

If correct it would be a really impressive light show. Do you have any links to the hard science?

It would certainly be quite a spectacle.
Unfortunately not, only what's linked in that blog post. The shrinking is a fact but the observation of the deformation (if genuine) hasn't been published yet.

Enjoy Orion while you can....

Follow the link I gave. 0.5 au (off 5.5) lost, measured using the same equipment, with no change in Brightness, with indications of acceleration in the change. Now, this could be an oscillation, or it could be pre-collapse....

And his prediction is "several times brighter than the moon"

Bad Astronmy says the science doesn't add up, it's been close to blowing for ages and nothings changed, it could be tonight, it could be a thousand years:

Thanks for the link.
Yeah, it's unlikely it's going to happen soon but you can't deny it would be cool. Astronomy as it's happening for everyone to see without the need for powerful/expensive equipment. I suspect at its brightest point it'll be as bright as a full moon, if that.

Toasty!

See the end of the article and the last two references at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betelgeuse.
