Webcam pic from the nearest "mountain" (827m) to my hometown.

Cambridge: It just started snowing again.

Cor! That ancient pine forest is the stuff dreams are made of for me. Amazing, really really beautiful. I can just imagine getting a little fire going in the middle of all that and just watching the snow fall. Lovely.

Mental note... must visit ancient Bavarian forest in the snow before long.

You should have seen this image 30 years ago. The forest is considerably scrawny compared to what it was then. The forest decline in the mid/late 80s did a lot of damage they are still trying to recover. It's all been reforested but it takes a while until those pines have grown to their previous size.
The smaller tower you can see in the picture used to be completely surrounded by trees and you couldn't see it from the surrounding area, now we can see it from our terrace (http://www.flickr.com/photos/karohemd/68757162/) (marked "public tower"). Unfortunately, I don't have an image from 30 years ago, but the forest covered the mountain completely and was higher (about up to the first stage of the radio tower, which used to be a listening station during the Cold War and is now used as a relay station for radio, TV and mobile signals).

Gah, just tried the flickr link, but work seems to have re-banned it. Oh well.

Yeah I thought the tower looked like it had some warlike purpose. God you're a lucky lad to have grown up around there - I grew up by a wood with a concrete WW2 pillbox in, endless fun. But that's just something else. Lovely doesn't describe it.

:/
The small tower you see in the webcam pic is entirely recreational and was (re)built in the 50s.
The radio tower is actually now owned by the Fraunhofer Institut who use it for radio experiments. I should really keep better up to date with stuff from home.

I'm not sure if 'homesick' is the right word, but whatever it is, I'm feeling it now. Beautiful!

This photo looks like a movie landscape....so beautiful that it CANNOT POSSIBLY BE REAL! Sigh....

It's a rubbish quality webcam. The reality would be even more beautiful.
This was taken at the base of that mountain when I was very little (37 years ago?):
