I can't decide what's better about this shot. The poor poor sod who will most likely feel humiliated (and be mocked for all eternity) or the photographer who managed this once in a lifetime shot. The whole thing can't have lasted more than a few seconds so to spot it and pinpoint it that accurately is one hell of an achievement (or just dumb luck). It's not just a crop of a wide shot, there is some serious shallow DOF in this shot so the subject was deliberately picked out. I assume the tog wanted to do a fancy shot with one of the plumes in focus and just got lucky that the one he picked turned around the wrong way. The whole shot is framed perfectly so I doubt very much it was such a quick snapshot.

It's an awesome photo. I thinks the guy is meant to be facing that way though. He's got a sword and is probably the... not drillmaster but senior to the troops. They're at attention and likely at an inspection or similar.

Hm, would he stand in a line in this case?
However, looking at it, the guy in front of him (his back) is further away from him than the other soldiers are apart so it could be a separate group in front of him, so you could be right.

I actually think razornet (see above) has a point and he's supposed to face this way. Due to the distance from the subjects and the shallow depth of field, the distances between the individuals are skewed.

Certainly that was my instant impression, that he was facing "his" troops, either to shout/relay the next bit of the drill, or to inspect them.

Of course the DOF could be photoshopped in later :-) but if so, that's an *excellent* plugin!
