These people gave Ticket to Ride an F (and Pandemic a C). They also thought it was a new game...
I wonder what they would think if someone showed them Dominion?

Hijacking this thread to ask... what's a good family game for Christmas? NB this has to cater for my mum who doesn't like complex rules (she likes pictionary), so no card games with tapping or complex instructions! My boys are too small to play, so it just has to cater for adults. Ta!

Hm. Most of the games I play are gamer games, not necessarily family games.

Something like Manhattan (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/199/manhattan), perhaps? It's a very visual game (arrangements on the cards translate to arrangements on the board) and the basic premise is to to collect points by building the most buildings in a block and the highest building.
There's no number crunching involved but good spatial awareness helps. Another thing in its favour is that a game doesn't last very long.

The classic Settlers of Catan (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/13/the-settlers-of-catan) should fit as well. Again, the premise is relatively simple and it has a good tactics/strategy vs. luck ratio.

I highly recommend this but annoyingly every site i found is sold out. Try looking in a local games shop for it though. It's simple, fun and good for all ages. More fun when alcohol is added too.

Sorry if this is useless and you can't find one.

Some people can't follow instructions so you should check for suggestions here (http://karohemd.livejournal.com/1985831.html), too. :P

My dad likes board games but isn't a gamer. I tend to get his ones from game shops though, as they are often a bit more interesting than the ones you get on the high street.

Favourites there include:

Blokus Trigon - Neat little strategy game with clear plastic pieces composed of up to 6 triangles on a hex/triangle grid - object is to place all your pieces and prevent opponents placing theirs

Qwirkle - Game with lovely wooden tiles with one of 6 shapes in one of 6 colours - object is to lay them out in rows, crossword style, matching either shape or colour with no duplicating in a row

Marrakech - lovely looking game with real rugs where you have to lay them in a market square, paying other players if you make the market keeper walk on their rugs.

Ingenious Hexagonal shape dominoes with a point scoring system based on radial lines from the tiles you've matched.

Pretty Japanese styled game about making paths for your dragon to go along, without falling off the edge or crashing into another player. We tend instead to play 'Sudden Death Tsuro' where you don't have a hand, just draw one, play one, which leads to giggles.

Tantrix - another hex tiles game, this time trying to make the longest line/loop with your colours.

Hive - two player strategy game with lovely bakelite tiles, where you play either the light or dark insects, all of whom can move in different ways (But there's a crib card to refer to and you learn it pretty quick!) with the aim of surrounding the other player's queen bee.

Let me know if you want to know about any more of these.

Wits and Wagers is a fun and quick game where you have to guess the answers to numerical questions and then bet on peoples estimates

It is available from amazon
