Yes, insomnia has me in its lethal grip again so I'm watching TOS (just got all three box sets of the remastered issue for a lot less than the previous versions from amazon).
To amuse myself and to relive my childhood memories, I'm occasionally switching the Audio to German which really isn't that bad but sometimes, there are odd differences.

Example: In the English The Naked Time, after Spock neck-pinches Sulu, Kirk says "You have to teach me that sometime" while in German, he says something along the lines of "He would have claimed to be the Emperor of China next". Huh, wuh? Also, in the bit just before, when Sulu grabs Uhura, he calls her his Queen and that he'll protect her in the German version while in the English I can't quite understand what he's babbling about.

I see many a long night ahead of me...

The remastering is a bit of a two-edged sword for me. The digital remastering/cleanup of the footage and audio is well done but the new CGI sequences in exterior shots of the Enterprise look cheaper than the original model shots because the CGI is very obvious. It doesn't fit in. The extra CGI mattes to planet exteriors etc. are OK, though.

at least it sounds as though it makes moderate sense, unlike many joyful engrish translations / sub-titling efforts!

Where did you get all 3 series cheap? I've been waiting and hoping for a drop in prices but I've just been on Amazon and the set of 3 is 88 quid! Am I missing a cheaper link?

Well, not that cheap (30 quid a season) but a lot cheaper than the non-remastered ones that are 50 quid a season.

Hmmm, I saw a vid on Play.com showing the new special effects and recoiled in horror! Part of the fun of Old Trek (and old Sci-Fi) for me is the cheesy effects. Happily I've managed to find a box set (seasons 1-3) not-remastered for 41 quid, though it seems like an obscure company so I may regret my cheapskate ways!

I'm not keen on the idea of updating the special effects. Surely it'll only make the costumes and sets look even more dated? Anyway, if people want state of the art effcts, why watch a 50 year-old sci-fi show in the first place?

If I was a bigger fan I'd upgrade to the Blu-ray sets, but I think I'll just stick with the non-remastered DVDs.

*nods*

Well, I actually didn't have any of it on DVD and the remastered sets were 20 quid cheaper than the older sets (and in smaller cases) so it was an obvious choice.
