Aww...
Old memories.
We need more Asterix & Obelix on this side of the pond!

Yes, you do.
Not that it's been any good since Goscinny died but the classics will remain classics.

"morgenland" war das letzte richtig gute buch.
und warum die auf deutsch ab der nummer 29 auch nicht mehr lesbar sind, verriet mir die taz: ab dann wechselte der übersetzer. und der macht die miesen geschichten auf deutsch noch mieser.
aber die alten sind gut!

Yeah, I saw that last week. :o)
Ah, fond memories. Buying a new (or at least one I hadn't yet had) Asterix book was always the highlight of the month for me. Sometimes, they would have a new Tintin book, too and I'd blow all of my allowance on them (IIRC, the Tintin books were actually more than a week's allowance, around DM5.50 when I first started reading them). :D

Aw! Asterix was one of the first non-Beano GNs I ever got, it was an ex-book from the local library ^^ I think I was about 9 or so?

I was probably around the same age (maybe a year younger) but this was the late 70s so cheap (compared to now)!

Absolutely! Also, a good age and a great step-up from Beano and Dandy-esque stories, I reckon ^^

I'm currently trying to figure out what the German equivalent to Beano would have been. At that time probably someting like Fix&Foxi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fix_and_Foxi) as that was what I was reading. No "human" characters, though.

Cute! They remind me of old American 1950's/60's funny animal comics dad used to get for me from comic events/shops when I was a kid. (I think they were mainly Harvey Comics licenses like Casper the Friendly Ghost/Richie Rich.)

I wish the UK had a better-developed comics scene. I was thinking recently how when I was a teen I would have hoped there would be more opportunity for UK comic artists to get published regardless of content/styles, but I'm still paying to make my own books o_O

I'm not part of the scene but I think it's even worse in Germany. There's kiddies stuff like the above and lots of translated American and Japanese stuff but there's very little in terms of original German stuff, at least not in the mainstream. I'll have a good look around Projekt 7 (a bit like Forbidden Planet but an independent shop run by friends of mine) when I'm in Nuremberg for Christmas to see what there is in terms of German comics.

Oh yeah please do! I'm always interested.

From what I hear, the German manga scene is still big/supported, it doesn't seem to have been bitten in the arse like it has in the US or the UK thanks to the recession/lack of marketing/pushing products that needed more polish just to get it onto the manga bandwagon/died a bit.

It's interesting that homegrown scenes have flourished under the banner of various influences in Germany (i.e. manga), by the sounds of it.
